Apotekarnes was founded when Stockholm pharmacists united under Apotekarnes Mineralvattens AB on May 2, 1874. Initially, they produced 37 different types of water, which were sold at pharmacies as well as in specialized water shops and kiosks. However, for many years, Apotekarnes did not produce any sodas, only so-called "soda water," such as soda, selters, and Vichy water. At a board meeting in 1908, it was decided that Apotekarnes would immediately start producing soft drinks, focusing initially on sugar soda, ginger soda, and a champagne drink. Shortly after, Citron-Brus was also launched.
In 1950, Apotekarnes Förenade Vattenfabriker merged with the Pripps group, and Apotekarnes Mineralvatten AB was integrated in 1964. Today, Apotekarnes is part of Carlsberg Sweden's product portfolio.
Must was introduced in 1910 as an alternative to beer. It shares many similarities with traditional dark beers, having a dark color, a foamy head, and flavors of hops and malt. However, the drink ended up being consumed differently than originally intended. Instead, it became a popular family soft drink known as Julmust (Christmas Must) and Påskmust (Easter Must). Must is considered one of the most quintessentially Swedish beverages, and today, a Swedish Christmas table is almost unimaginable without it.
It is a vegan-friendly drink.
